Step 1 — Convert property to sq ft:
Property (sq ft) = Property Size × Conversion Factor
Step 2 — Net product per application:
Qnet = Property (sq ft) ÷ Coverage Rate (sq ft per product unit)
Step 3 — Add waste/overlap factor:
Qtotal = Qnet × (1 + Waste%/100)
Step 4 — Total for all applications:
Qall = Qtotal × Number of Applications
Coverage Efficiency:
Efficiency = 1 ÷ (1 + Waste%/100) × 100%
Assumptions & References
- Unit conversions: 1 acre = 43,560 sq ft; 1 hectare = 107,639.104 sq ft; 1 sq yd = 9 sq ft; 1 sq m = 10.7639 sq ft.
- Coverage rate is assumed uniform across the entire property (flat terrain, consistent application speed).
- Waste/overlap factor (default 10%) accounts for equipment overlap, uneven spray patterns, and edge losses — industry standard is 5–15% (USDA Extension Service guidelines).
- Product unit labels (gallons, liters, fl oz, lbs) are preserved from the selected coverage rate unit; no liquid-to-weight conversion is performed.
- Maximum waste factor capped at 50% to prevent unrealistic estimates.
- Always consult the product label for the manufacturer's recommended application rate, which supersedes any calculated estimate.
- This calculator does not account for dilution ratios; if the product requires mixing, apply the coverage rate to the diluted (ready-to-use) volume.
